Parties in The Great Gatsby
In The Great Gatsby, Nick attends three different parties in the first couple chapters. He attends the Buchanan’s, Tom and Myrtle’s and Gatsby’s Party. Each party was different and unique in their own way.
The Buchanan’s party was located in East egg. East egg is more fashionable than West egg. Most of the richer people live is East egg. The Buchanan’s house is a red and white Georgian style mansion. It also has big French windows on the front. After Nick arrives they go out on a rosy-colored porch which has a nice view of the sunset. There are four guests; Nick, Daisy Buchanan, Tom Buchanan and Jordan Baker. Since there were not many people there, it was more of a dinner party instead. Since there are only a couple people at the party it can create an awkward tension. The tension really started after Tom went inside after he got a phone call from his girl in the city. Daisy tries to act like she's not bothered and changes the subject to talk about the butler's nose. The second time the phone rang there was an awkward tension at the table and all of the subjects they were talking about had been dropped.
Myrtle’s party was in New York. It was in a small, top floor, apartment that Tom and Myrtle had together when they went into the city to be with each other. It had a small living room, dining-room, bedroom and bath. The living room was crowded with tapestried furniture that was entirely too large for it. At first it was just Tom and Myrtle but then around 8 o’clock Myrtle called some people up and invited them over. Her sister, Catharine, and her friend Mr. McKee came over. Everyone was drinking and smoking. Nick ended up having to run to the store because they were out of cigarettes. After a while, Nick and Catherine start gossiping with each other and reveal important information about Tom and Myrtles relationship. According to Catherine, “Neither of them can stand who they’re married to.” And the reason Tom won’t get a divorce is because Daisy is Catholic, which isn’t true. Tom has come up with an elaborate lie of why he can’t divorce and be with Myrtle. Everyone was drinking except Catherine. Collectively they had finished one bottle of whisky and were on the second one. By 10 o’clock, there was so much smoke that even the puppy was having trouble seeing and was groaning faintly. Soon after that Tom and Myrtle got into a fight about the right to say Daisy’s name. Myrtle got mad and started shouting “Daisy! Daisy! Daisy!” Which made Tom mad and he ended up punching and breaking her nose. After helping Myrtle and cleaning up the blood everyone left.
Gatsby’s party was in West Egg, in his huge castle-like mansion that was right next door to Nick’s house. Gatsby’s parties often had lots of people that came and majority of them weren’t even invited. They were either invited by someone who was going or just showed up. His party was extravagant with his huge garden all lit up, a band, champagne in bowel sized glasses, and two dinner times too. One around 7 o’clock and the other just after midnight. Almost all of the people at the party Nick doesn’t know. He recognizes one gentleman from the train and then he spots Jordan. Throughout the party, both of them search throughout the party to try and find Gatsby. One spot they searched was in a high Gothic library but the only person there was a middle-age drunk guy who was amazed that all of the books were real. After a bit Nick starts chatting with this guy about the war and the division they were in. The guy had recognized Nick's face since they were in the same division. It turns out that the guy Nick was talking to was Gatsby and they made plans for the next morning to go out on his hydroplane.
All of these parties would be amazing to attend but if i had to choose one party to go to it would be Gatsby’s party. Who wouldn’t want to go to a millionaire's huge party? Although there would be a lot of people there, that can make it really fun. Also by having a ton of people, there would be less awkward tension and interruptions that disrupt the whole party. As someone who can get overwhelmed by being around a lot of people, I would probably end up going to Gatsby's huge library to read and relax there until I felt like going and socializing again. Also I probably would be hanging out in the garden and amongst the plants for a while. I mean who wouldn't want to be in an extravagant garden that is lit up like a Christmas tree? Since there always are so many people there, I would probably try and find someone to socialize with for the night. The Buchanan’s and Myrtle's party would be fun to go to but it wouldn’t be as fun as Gatsby's. The Buchanan’s dinner party would be nice but the tension with Tom and Daisy the whole thing would be awkward. And with Myrtle's, I would probably get bored or tired with the people there and end up petting her dog the whole time.
